The Shaker oval box exemplifies the Shakers work in general. The wood was chosen with great care. The graceful swallowtails were cut with precision and the copper tacks carefully alligned. TravisWood has continued this honored tradition is our collection.

We begin by harvesting dead or drying sugar maples from our woodlot. Next they are sawn into thin sheets and dried. After being dimensioned to thickness, width and length, the fingers or “swallowtails are cut and beveled. The blank is then steamed and bent around a mold and nailed with copper tacks, which were used so as not to discolor the wood. When the band has dried, the top and bottom of pine are fastened with small wooden pegs.

All boxes are finished in paint or natural finish. The choice of colors include: Yellow, mustard, bittersweet, old red, salmon, dark green, apple green, blue, robin’s egg blue, navy blue, blue-green or natural. Presently, TravisWood produces the ovals in fourteen sizes ranging from #00 - #12.
